As another United Way campaign comes to a close, we have so much to celebrate. Community members, businesses and organizations came together and raised a record-breaking $26.6 Million dollars that is helping to fight poverty in our region. A brand new voice against poverty emerged in Soap Box Duo. Days before the final showcase, we got a call from Jenesa stating that she wouldn't make the final rehearsal. She was on her way to the hospital. Hours later, she was in emergency surgery getting her appendix removed. Barely able to walk on the day of Red Tie Gala, their final chance to showcase live and garner votes, we pushed her around in a wheel chair as the Top 3 got red carpet ready with Mr. Derk, Shades of Grey and EvelineCharles. Through her internal fortitude and saving every last ounce of her energy, she managed to pull together a marvelous vocal performance, capping the evening with winning the grand prize. Clinton Richardson kicked off the gala with a story of poverty inspired by his mother that made a resounding emotional connection with the audience. With just her vocal, an acoustic guitar, and backed by a cello, Posy J created a beautiful musical moment in the sold-out gala of over 700 guests, where you could hear a pin drop. Notably, she gained online praise from none other than Edmonton's First Lady and United Way Campaign Cabinet Co-chair, Sarah Chan. Congratulations to Soap Box Duo for taking home the grand prize valued at over $30,000: $5,000 cash, $5,000 demo recording package with PlanIt Sound, and a brand new 2 year lease of a Sherwood Honda Civic!
We are so honoured to work alongside United Way of the Alberta Capital Region for over 7 years now, in so many varying capacities. This was the first year ever that PlanIt Sound not only produced the entertainment for the evening, but also executed the event management for Red Tie Gala.
